Flint

flint090106

This is a flint stone I collected in Syria. This kind of flint is used for stone tools back in Paleolithic age. Geologically, it should be called silicified tuff. Sketched on the 6th of January, 2009. #121 of the book.

Peridotite xenolith

olivine090129

I better call this olivine xenolith. Peridotite is formed in the Earth's mantle and derived from there in magmas. When olivine is gem-quality, it is called peridot (unfortunately, this is NOT a gemstone). I collected this at a volcano in Syria. Sketched on the 29th of January, 2009. #116 of the book.

Fluorite

fluorite090120

This octahedrally shaped crystal is a fluorite. This shape is formed when it is cleaved. Original natural shape is cubic, though. Sketched on the 20th of January, 2009.

Pebble

pebble090924

Now the thing I use the loupe for—a pebble. This is a pebble of Nohi rhyolite that widely occurs at Gifu prefecture, central Japan. I collected this at a river bank of the River Nagara and I sketched this on the 24th of September, 2009. #118 of the book.

Stone tool

lithic091119

This is a stone tool (or a fragment?) found at a tell in Syria. I'm not a specialist on the stone tools so I can't identify the age from this. It's impossible to carry these cultural properties then I returned them back to the site next day. Sketched on the 19th of November, 2009.

Boring core after sampling

sample090810

This is a remnant of the core after collecting small samples for detailed analysis. Careful sampling from every 1 cm from more than 20 meters was such a murderously tiring work! I wanted to keep this as a memento of the hard work (and hope of the great discovery! :D), but I found this had broken into pieces when I got flew back to Japan... I sketched this one on the 10th of August, 2009.

Boring cores

cores090806

The purpose of the trip was a kind of geological study related to the archeological project. These are the cores we collected this time. Core samples were kept in the half-cut PVC tubes and wrapped with clingfilm in the field. Hey, the room was filled with these muds! This was sketched on the first day of the boring, the 6th of August, 2009.

Silicified wood

petrifiedwood090615

This is a specimen of a silicified (or petrified) wood from Arizona, USA. I borrowed this from another colleague. Sketched on the 15th of June, 2009.

Trilobite fossil

trilobite090612

A trilobite fossil I borrowed from my colleague. I used this one for my geology class today and I have just sketched this when I got home. On the 12th of June, 2009.
